TRANSFORMING OUR CHURCH BACKGROUND

The Pastoral Council at Holy Spirit was presented with parish needs (some of which developed over a long period of time). In an effort to decide the best method to address the needs, the Pastoral Council discussed formation of an Ad Hoc or Steering Committee to assist in determining what the next steps should be. The needs to be addressed were as follows:

  1. Why does Holy Spirit exist?
  2. Are there people coming here that are not being fed in body and spirit?
  3. What can we do to help people grow in their faith?
  4. How do we minister to our youth better?
  5. Form/Reform
  6. Youth Reach
  7. Parish Van
  8. Reach out to inactive Catholics
  9. Hispanic Outreach
  10. Capital Campaign Out reach/Stewardship
  11. Potential growth of the parish and spatial needs for existing programs

Directions to Take

Dana Gensler (Music/Liturgy), Kathleen Berta (Pastoral Council Liturgy liaison), and John and Lyn Knepler (parishioners) agreed to attend the Form/Reform Conference in October to help with the process of forming a comprehensive plan to address parish needs (many of which were recognized by the prior council also). The theme of the program was “The Heart of the Matter – Reformed Churches, Transformed Lives.” The motto: “who we are, what we do, and how we can do what we do better.”

Upon return from the conference, the group met in November and compiled a list of potential committee members. In January of 2003, the group met and the Ad Hoc Committee adopted the name “Transforming Our Church (TORCH)” for the permanent committee being established to discern the spiritual, liturgical, and spatial needs for the parish community.
