TORCH “2008 In a Nutshell”

With the advent of the PPSC (Parkside Project Steering Committee) it was necessary to discuss and establish what the TORCH role would be going forward versus that of the Steering Committee.  It was determined to be TORCH’s duty to oversee the developed plans for consistency with the original philosophy and liturgical ideals of the original Master Plan.  The PPSC would have the responsibility of implementing the Master Plan.  The TORCH committee role would include the following:

-development of Master Plan (ongoing as parish size and needs change)
-oversee and preserve architectural and liturgical character of buildings
-point of contact for development for Spirit II
-facilitate transition from “wish list” square footages determined for Master Plan
to reality of Building Plan for Spirit I
-broker spatial needs based on re-defined Master Plan
-educate and communicate re-defined Master Plan to parish
-revise RoadMap and communicate to parish
-develop Spirit II and Spirit III  (and …)
-oversee interior design and furnishings for Spirit I

The Master Plan was revised and updated so that BCDM (our architects) could prepare preliminary drawing for review and approval by Holy Spirit.  TORCH met with ministries such as Liturgy, Catechesis, and staff to determine space allocations.  Other meetings were attended such as the Elrod Road Interchange sessions.  Expert opinions were obtained regarding for items such as removal and reinstallation of our stained glass windows. By March we were meeting to review the site layout plans from the architects for Spirit I.  The team quickly moved on to discussion and update of the Master Plan to the architects for Spirit II as this had to be done by the end of July to achieve the possibility of making Spirit I & II a continuous building plan to capitalize on construction savings.  The Site Development document was reviewed and revised for Spirit II.

In late April a group from Holy Spirit traveled to Owensboro to meet with the Bishop and the Diocesan Administrative Committee and received approval for a continuous build project on Spirit I & II pending financial support and approval by the parish.  Spirit II cost would be funded by a commercial loan with a likely fifteen year term.  TORCH worked closely with the Liturgy Core group over the next couple of months to ensure that the new worship space would meet the liturgical needs of Holy Spirit reviewing such things as:  floor plans, elevations, door sizes, ramps, seating, etc.  By July discussion abounded on ideas and guidelines for placement of such things as: tabernacle, baptismal font, reconciliation, sacred vessels, etc.

Members of TORCH, PPSC, and Fr. Jerry traveled to Omaha to visit four churches designed by BCDM for examples of some of the design ideas the architects suggested to us and further discussion.  Meetings were held reviewing pictures and commentary from those who traveled for ideas that might be incorporated or discarded in the continued effort to achieve an embodiment of our church community.

During August more meetings were held discussing such things as; placement of the table of the Lord , site arrangements to best handle adult education, and other ongoing catechetical education , storage for those who serve: Altar Servers, Ushers, and Eucharistic Ministers.
On September 10th the ground breaking ceremony was held at Parkside (see ground breaking link).  Schematic drawings and brick pattern were displayed at the Ministry Fair the weekend of September 20th.

Meetings were held with Knights of Columbus, Get Up & Go, and Friends of Mary Magdalen during October.  Our architects were back in November to share their depiction of Spirit II and how we would handle those things near and dear to our church community such as our feasts:

  • Christmass Masses
  • Ash Wednesday
  • Palm Sunday
  • Holy Thursday
  • Good Friday
  • Holy Saturday
  • Easter
  • Pentecost

to name but a few.  There are many other aspects of our church life to consider:  Mary’s statue/garden, flower pots and concrete benches, Respect life monument, holy water basins, baptismal fonts, Mary statue, Joseph statue, Cross, Corpus on the cross, tabernacle stand and candle, Stations of the Cross, Communion vessel safe, Holy Oil repositories, Poor box, piano, organ.  TORCH continues to work toward refining the needs of our whole Church community.
